New York City, home to millions, often sees its residents judged by seemingly random factors, from neighborhoods to local pronunciations. Among these factors is the area code associated with phone numbers.
Carrie Bradshaw, a character from ‘Sex and the City,’ famously had an issue changing her area code from 917 to 347 in the movie. Such changes are significant for many, as area codes can carry a certain prestige or association.
Starting this Thursday, New York City will introduce its newest area code, 465. This will become the eighth code servicing the city and is the first to be added since 2017. A continuously growing population means a constant need for unique phone numbers.
The iconic 212 area code, first introduced in 1947, is considered a representation of the elite and traditional New York. The rapper Azealia Banks even mentioned it in her song ‘212,’ emphasizing its connection to Manhattan.
Various parts of the city are assigned different area codes. The new code, 465, will serve areas such as the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Marble Hill section of Manhattan.
Getting a new area code like 465 might feel unsettling for some. However, it’s a part of the natural evolution as the city expands and technology adapts.
