In the early hours of August 25, 2026, NATO responded to a potential threat when an unmanned aerial vehicle seemingly approached Romanian airspace. Concerns persist that the conflict involving Russia and Ukraine might extend into NATO regions.
The Romanian defense ministry reported Tuesday that two F-18 jets from the Spanish Air and Space Force were deployed from Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base 57. This action followed the detection of an aerial target approximately two miles east of Vylkove, which lies on the border between Ukraine and Romania.
Local authorities alerted residents in the northern part of Tulcea County about the risk of falling debris, advising them to seek safety. While the defense ministry confirmed the detection of the aerial target, they did not clarify if the drone breached Romanian airspace.
