Missouri Foster Mother Avoids Prison Despite Serious Allegations

A Missouri foster mother, Brenda Deutsch, was embroiled in controversy and allegations but managed to avoid prison time. She, accused of trading a teenage girl for a monkey, received condemnation from the court. The case exposed significant flaws in the foster care system.

Deutsch, 70, faced a seven-year prison sentence for child endangerment. However, a Lincoln County judge opted to suspend this sentence. Instead, she was placed on three years of probation, allowing her freedom if she adhered to the conditions set forth. According to FOX2 St. Louis, Judge Thomas Frawley harshly criticized her actions.

Beyond reproaching Deutsch, Judge Frawley took the step of revoking her foster care license. He also addressed the courtroom, expressing regret for the failings of the Missouri foster care system, which permitted Deutsch to maintain her license despite the allegations.

Legal and Familial Reactions

Brina Johnson, Deutsch’s biological daughter, expressed disappointment with the outcome. Johnson offered crucial testimony about alleged abuse, including details of a teenager at the center of the claims involving Deutsch trading her for a monkey.

“I’m kinda lost for words because this is not the end we wished for,” Johnson stated to FOX2.

Johnson presented recorded conversations to detectives as evidence. She claimed Deutsch owned several monkeys and had not treated the animals any better than her foster children.

Investigation and Allegations

The investigation into Deutsch’s conduct began when she sought permission to take the foster child to Texas. The situation unraveled further when an anonymous report was made to the Missouri Department of Social Services alleging Deutsch’s abuse, both physical and mental, of the child. Authorities later uncovered claims that the child had been traded for an exotic animal.

The girl, now 17, told investigators she was left in an unsanitary Texas home with exotic animals. After the report, Texas child protective services took her into custody.

Court documents described severe mistreatment. The teenager recounted being struck with objects such as a paddle and shoes. She also endured threats of violence, including one instance where Deutsch allegedly threatened her life.

Deutsch, who had fostered over 200 children, gave no comment outside the courthouse. She avoided media attention by obscuring her face and swiftly leaving the scene.

Systemic Failures Acknowledged

Despite her dissatisfaction with the judicial outcome, Johnson found some solace in the judge’s acknowledgment of systemic failures.

“It was good to know somebody knows from the other side of the street, that this shouldn’t have happened,” Johnson remarked. “None of it should. And the system did fail us, failed them all.”
