Mike Tomlin Advocates for Hines Ward’s Hall of Fame Induction During NBC Debut

During his debut with NBC Sports, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin advocated for his former player, Hines Ward, to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Tomlin joined the analyst crew for the Hall of Fame Game, which saw the Carolina Panthers face off against the Arizona Cardinals. This event marked the celebration of players like the Panthers’ Luke Kuechly and Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald, both part of this year’s Hall of Fame Class.

When Tomlin was asked who he’d choose for a Hall of Fame spot, he didn’t hesitate. He expressed strong support for Hines Ward, highlighting Ward’s impressive career stats. Tomlin stated, “My Golden Ticket unquestionably goes to Hines Ward. He’s got Hall of Fame numbers, with 1,000 career catches, 12,000 yards, 85 touchdowns, and a Super Bowl MVP.” Beyond the impressive statistics, Tomlin emphasized Ward’s style of play. “This guy was a predator, not prey. Every defensive player in the NFL feared Hines Ward,” he added during NBC’s coverage.

Ward had a remarkable 13-year tenure in the NFL, all with the Steelers from 1998 to 2011. He contributed to two Super Bowl victories in Pittsburgh, earning the title of Super Bowl XL MVP under coach Bill Cowher. Later, he excelled during Tomlin’s Super Bowl champion season in 2009. In addition to these achievements, Ward was a four-time Pro Bowl selection. He currently ranks 31st in all-time receiving yards, though active players like Keenan Allen and Stefon Diggs could surpass him if they stay healthy.

Ward was also a semifinalist for this year’s Hall of Fame Class, joining receivers Anquan Boldin and Sterling Sharpe in the list of potential inductees for future years. Meanwhile, Tomlin’s own Hall of Fame induction seems likely due to his successful coaching career.

Tomlin’s debut as an NBC analyst followed his 19-season tenure as the Steelers’ head coach, where he achieved a record of 193 wins, 114 losses, and 2 ties. He set an NFL record with 19 consecutive winning seasons and secured a Super Bowl win in 2009. His addition to NBC Sports has been met with positive feedback from fans, indicating they appreciate his new role. Tomlin will continue to cover football on NBC, primarily on Sunday nights, with their first regular-season game featuring the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks on September 9.
