Michigan Republican Tom Smith Resumes Campaign Against Democratic Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet

A Michigan Republican who had previously paused his campaign is back in the race after winning a primary he initially left. Tom Smith, who endorsed an opponent before securing the nomination, used a GOP unity event to restart his campaign against Democratic Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District.

At a gathering in Macomb County, Smith encouraged Republican activists to support his efforts to unseat Rivet. Emphasizing his commitment, he stated, My name is Tom Smith, and I’m running for the 8th Congressional District to unseat communist comrade Rivet. And I’ll need your help to do it.

Although Smith didn’t officially confirm his return to campaign activities to Fox News Digital, he expressed in a statement to CNN that he felt humbled and honored by the primary win. He also shared his intent to collaborate with Speaker Johnson and fellow Republicans to promote an agenda focused on reducing costs for working families and bolstering America’s affordability.

Smith had previously left the race, supporting his then-opponent, Al Lemmo, who placed third in the primary. The primary saw Smith emerge victorious over Trump-backed Amir Hassan, who posted a video accepting his defeat and acknowledging the challenging nature of the race.

Despite coming in second, Hassan expressed no regrets, conveying optimism for future endeavors while congratulating opponents and expressing eagerness to continue political efforts. He stated, I fell short last night. I make no excuse. It was a tough race.

Hassan closed his message by indicating his persistent belief in changing the political landscape, commenting, it’s still time to flip the eighth.
