Michigan Family Faces Threats After Speaking Against Transgender Athlete Participation

A Michigan father, Sean Lechner, revealed that his family encountered alleged death threats, racist insults, and threats of violence after he and his teenage daughter, Briley Lechner, spoke publicly about a transgender athlete who unknowingly competed in girls’ volleyball.

Lechner reported significant hostility following their public statements on safeguarding girls’ sports. In addition to violence threats, the family received accusations of promoting hate against transgender individuals. This led to such concern that the FBI reached out to them. Despite the adversity, they also received an overwhelming amount of support.

Standing Against Harassment

Briley Lechner, a student-athlete at Monroe High School, conveyed that her father bore the brunt of the abuse. She was accused of spreading negativity, which she refuted, affirming her stance on fairness for female athletes. Briley expressed her disappointment with the lack of support from authorities and adults expected to safeguard and promote fair competition.

“It makes me feel like I’m almost on my own,” Briley stated, emphasizing the expectation of protection from those in political and educational power.

Briley first voiced her concerns post-season on Dec. 8, alongside her father’s announcement of a Title IX complaint, which drew national attention. The harassment began shortly after her public appearance at the Monroe County Courthouse.

The Contest and Its Aftermath

The controversy began when Briley unknowingly participated against a transgender athlete during the 2024 season, later discovering their identity in 2025. Sean Lechner filed a Title IX complaint after Briley had to share locker rooms with the opposing athlete. The revelations led to significant discomfort and surprise.

Briley noted the athletic disparity observed during matches, which affected the focus of her team. When competing again, knowing the athlete was biologically male, added mental challenges during the games.

The U.S. Department of Education is investigating both Monroe and Ann Arbor Public Schools for allegedly obligating female athletes to compete and share facilities with a biological male.

Legal and Policy Considerations

The Michigan High School Athletic Association allows case-by-case determinations on transgender participation in postseason activities. Regular-season decisions are left to individual schools. Briley emphasized researching schools’ policies as she considers her collegiate soccer future.

The Supreme Court ruled on June 30 to permit sex-separated teams under Title IX, impacting state-level legislative regulation but not mandating uniform policy adoption.

Sean Lechner remains steadfast despite threats, stating they transformed hate into advocacy, standing firm on advocating fairness for female athletes.
