Melat Kiros Triumphs in Democratic Primary

Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist and immigrant, achieved a notable victory by defeating Representative Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary for the Denver area. This win marks a significant moment for the progressive segment of the Democratic Party.

The Associated Press reported Ms. Kiros’s victory, which unseats a 15-term incumbent. This success aligns with a broader trend of insurgent wins in recent congressional contests, including those in New York. Given the Democratic stronghold in the district, Ms. Kiros is well-positioned for a win in the upcoming November elections.

As a lawyer and doctoral student in public affairs, Ms. Kiros presented herself as an outsider prepared to tackle issues like the affordability crisis, which she claimed the Democratic establishment ignored. Her campaign strongly opposed U.S. support for Israel, making it a key element of her political stance.

Despite Ms. DeGette benefiting from substantial fund-raising, including a boost from external groups, Ms. Kiros’s grass-roots strategy proved effective. Early results on Wednesday showed Ms. Kiros leading by over five percentage points with close to 80 percent of votes tallied.

Ms. Kiros’s campaign biography highlights an incident in 2023 when she was dismissed from a Manhattan law firm. She defied orders to remove a letter questioning Israel’s legitimacy, defending pro-Palestinian protests and criticizing the firm’s stance on law student activism.
