Former U.S. Women’s National Team star Megan Rapinoe expressed her views on barring transgender athletes from women’s sports, describing it as “an attack on women in society.” She discussed this perspective during her appearance on “The View,” highlighting the issue as part of a broader campaign against women’s empowerment.
Rapinoe argued that opponents are using transgender inclusion in sports as a divisive issue. She dismissed claims that the restrictions aim to protect girls’ and women’s sports, suggesting that sports are being used as a pretext. “They’re going after trans people in sports,” she said. “We don’t want our little girls to be unsafe in sports. And it’s like, ‘Unsafe from who?’”
She referenced a controversial bill in Washington which proposes requiring girls to verify their sex through invasive tests. This bill, known as Initiative IL26-638, would prevent those defined as “biologically male” from participating in female sports. It mandates verification of biological sex by healthcare providers, as noted by the House Republican Caucus.
Rapinoe remarked, “They don’t like women in sports because it helps us with confidence and power.” She emphasized the role of sports in developing leadership skills, pointing out that many successful women in leadership have backgrounds in elite sports.
In an article for Marie Claire, Rapinoe argued that the anti-trans legislation is not about protecting girls but serves as a distraction from more pressing issues. She claims that trans people have long been part of sports, and that efforts restricting them are a means to obscure real legislative damage.
The debate surrounding transgender athletes continues to be a contentious topic, with figures like Rapinoe and others voicing strong opinions on both sides.
