Award-winning news outlet Fox News has reported that a top vacation host, Mallorca, intends to attract affluent American tourists. This step responds to overtourism problems and mounting dissatisfaction among locals. The Spanish island, part of the Balearic Islands, draws millions. According to the Balearic Islands Statistics Institute, over 13 million tourists visited in the first ten months of 2025.

Despite worries of excessive tourism, local officials see fewer but richer visitors as a solution to redefine Mallorca’s image from a party hub mainly for Europeans, as told to The Wall Street Journal.

As noted by The Journal, Americans spent roughly $410 daily in Spain in July, primarily outpacing Germans and British travelers, who disbursed $240 and $260, respectively. Tourism officials aim for this demographic amidst overtourism concerns.

Reports stated that American visits surged by 60% this year up to June, facilitated by expanded United Airlines direct service. Julie Middlebrook-Levin, a luxury travel advisor at Fora, informed Fox News Digital about Mallorca’s growing appeal to Americans.

Middlebrook-Levin believes Americans represent a novel approach to Mallorca and asserts properties increasingly target them due to their spending power and desire for new experiences. During her stay in Spain, before visiting Mallorca, she noticed a trend where luxury travelers seek locally-focused activities.

Middlebrook-Levin stated, “They’re looking for experiences that are very local, that include local food, local experiences,” regarding Mallorca’s appeal. Homar contrasted Americans with British and German tourists, who mainly visit for partying.

Homar asserted, “Tourism is our way of life.” He emphasized a model shift towards quality over quantity, saying, “We need fewer tourists who spend more.” Yet, not all locals are on board. Stella Arbona, a 23-year-old bakery worker, expressed the shift towards wealthier visitors doesn’t solve the underlying problem.

She commented, “They occupy our streets, our homes, our spaces, and often fail to respect the people who are working for them.” The island hosts millions of annual travelers as a preferred European destination.

To mitigate tensions, Middlebrook-Levin emphasized tourists should act respectfully when visiting. She mirrored this sentiment by saying, “I think that tourists need to be mindful of being a guest in another country.”
