Madison Police Chief, John Patterson, extended sympathies to the man’s family and explained that the incident was captured on cellphone video. The footage circulated online, capturing the sound of three gunshots.
Chief Patterson noted that the video shared publicly provides only one perspective. He emphasized the importance of reviewing other available footage to understand the full context, urging the community to remain calm as the investigation progresses.

The shooting took place in a busy area near the state Capitol, known for its vibrant mix of restaurants, bars, and residential homes. The site is the same street where a similar incident occurred in 2015, involving the shooting of Tony Robinson, a biracial man, by a white officer. The district attorney previously found the officer justified in that case, leading to no charges but a $3.35 million settlement to Robinson’s family in 2017.
Community Response
The police did not disclose the races of the officer or the suspect. However, local Black community advocates claimed the man killed was Black. Brandi Grayson, leader of Urban Triage, commented on the incident, highlighting issues of state violence.
A crowd gathered after the shooting, chanting for the arrest of the involved officers. Among the demonstrators was gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong, who voiced the need for balanced community responses.
Governor Tony Evers acknowledged the shooting on social media, calling for transparency and accountability as more details emerge.
Details of the Incident
The police responded to reports of someone trying to enter parked vehicles. The suspect had attempted to flee on a bike through neighborhood backyards. Officers intercepted him on the street, leading to a confrontation where the suspect brandished a knife, injuring an officer.
An officer deployed a taser, which failed. The injured officer then fired his weapon. The suspect was transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Chief Patterson described the involved officer as experienced but did not provide further personal details.
Patterson remarked on the danger when a knife is introduced in such situations, noting that it escalates risks for all involved. He added that the knife was large and fixed-blade, with a photo to be released later.
Another officer sustained injuries unrelated to the knife. Two additional officers were unhurt. All involved officers will be on administrative leave during the investigation, as standard protocol.
