Macklemore Removed from Ed Sheeran’s Tour Over Pro-Palestinian Remarks

Recently, Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour after expressing support for Palestine. A week before, he had called for the freedom of Palestine during a performance. The rapper also performed “Hind’s Hall,” an anti-Israel song, while opening for Sheeran.

According to the Messina Touring Group, the concert promoters were informed that venues would not allow the events to proceed with Macklemore on the lineup. This would have led to tour cancellations, affecting many fans. As a result, Macklemore will not perform in the remaining U.S. shows. He was initially scheduled for eight of the ten shows left.

Macklemore Responds

Macklemore addressed his removal in an Instagram post. He emphasized that neither he, Ed Sheeran, nor Pink are victims in this situation, having careers and opportunities. The rapper highlighted the plight of Palestinian people suffering from violence and displacement. He noted that over 20,000 children died in Gaza alone.

Controversial Performance

On September 4, Macklemore’s performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey drew criticism, with some fans expressing their disapproval. An Instagram page called “Stop Antisemitism” shared a video condemning Macklemore’s actions. Pink’s sharing of this video led to backlash against her for perceived pro-Israel sympathies.

In his Instagram post, Macklemore declared that he and Sheeran, whom he regards as a friend, had tough but respectful conversations. The disagreements centered on Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian stance.

Impact on the Tour

Macklemore revealed that Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, influenced Sheeran’s decision by stating Macklemore could not perform at the Gillette Stadium. Kraft, along with other stadium owners, reportedly pressured Sheeran to decide between Macklemore and their venues.

Sheeran, known for his apolitical approach, faced a dilemma. He found the “Free Palestine” message problematic due to its impact on some people he knew. Sheeran’s public stance did not involve taking sides, complicating the situation.

Macklemore questioned the timing of his removal, as he had been voicing his “Free Palestine” message for three years. The difference, he noted, was performing with a globally renowned artist in major American stadiums.

Continued Friendship

The rapper remarked that weaponizing accusations of antisemitism can silence criticism of the Israeli state. He maintained that anti-Zionist views often get equated with antisemitism, which he believes protects Israel from accountability rather than shielding Jewish people.

Macklemore concluded by affirming his hope of maintaining his friendship with Sheeran. Despite the controversy, he stands by his position, even if it cost him the tour opportunities.
