Lucas Glover’s Unique Shoe Removal Explained

During the final round of the 3M Open, former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover made headlines in an unusual way. After making a 10-foot birdie putt at the 10th hole, Glover removed his shoes before retrieving his golf ball. This act sparked curiosity among spectators and commentators.

The Golf Channel and other observers speculated that Glover’s actions were a protest against the AimPoint green-reading system, which he reportedly dislikes. However, the truth was different.

Lucas Glover, walking off the second tee during the second round of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities, was mindful of his metal spike marks, as confirmed by the PGA Tour.

The Tour clarified that Glover was asked to be considerate of the marks his spikes left on the green. His choice to remove his shoes was a practical response to this request. Glover wanted to prevent any damage around the hole for the players following him.

On social media, Glover humorously addressed the incident, clarifying his intent. He has been wearing spikes for over two decades on the PGA Tour. He mentioned that while tapping down spike marks is now permissible, it was not an option in the past. He expressed surprise at being approached about his spikes mid-game by an official, not a fellow player.

Glover argued that the officials should not have intervened, as he broke no rules. Others in groups ahead and behind were also wearing metal spikes. He noted that the bent grass greens, softened by watering, were prone to damage by any spikes.

His Instagram post clarified that the shoe removal was not related to AimPoint. The action aimed to prevent marking the green around the hole, regardless of spike type. Glover repeatedly emphasized players’ ability to fix spike depressions, contrasting past restrictions.

He also expressed disappointment that the incident distracted from other tournament highlights, such as Jackson Koivin’s performance.

Looking ahead to the Rocket Classic, Glover intends to continue wearing metal spikes and reminded others of the ability to tap down marks. His statement was a lighthearted take on a situation he considers a non-issue.
