Bass stated that city and county teams have opened spaces for those seeking relief from the smoke and are committed to extinguishing the fire. The emergency declaration highlights the need for swift action and seeks resources under the California Disaster Assistance Act.
The fire started at a cold-storage warehouse, leading to shelter-in-place orders. Residents are advised to close windows, turn off air conditioning, and stay indoors with pets. Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Jaime Moore mentioned that dealing with hazardous materials is a priority, and they face challenges due to the building’s layout.
The warehouse contains 85 million pounds of frozen food. Moore explained that limited visibility and access hinder efforts to move pallets and tackle the blaze. The priority is the health and safety of those affected, and the removal of toxic materials aims to prevent an environmental disaster.
