Five students from Lincoln-Way East High School were removed from a varsity football game on Friday night. The removal followed reports of racist harassment and offensive behavior directed at Homewood-Flossmoor fans. This information was confirmed in statements from the involved high schools, released on Saturday.
In a joint statement, Jennifer Norrell, Superintendent for H-F District 233, and Principal Clinton Alexander, condemned the actions. “The five student fans made a very bad choice to engage in disrespectful and racist harassment towards HF students seated in the bleachers,” the statement declared. They expressed appreciation for staff members who acted promptly to remove the individuals and maintain a safe environment for other students.
The district is collaborating with Lincoln-Way East’s leadership and local authorities to evaluate measures for preventing such incidents in the future. This assessment may include considering potential legal actions.
Lincoln-Way East addressed the situation on their website, expressing that they are treating the incident with importance. They acknowledged that a group of students displayed inappropriate conduct during the game. Importantly, the involved students are not part of the football team.
The statement from Lincoln-Way East extended a sincere apology to the Homewood-Flossmoor community. The district emphasized that the actions of these students do not align with the expectations and standards of Lincoln-Way East.
The district confirmed that the involved students have been identified and will face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with school policies and procedures.
