Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Faces Renovation Challenges and Vandalism

3 days ago 0

The recently renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is facing unexpected challenges, attracting significant attention. Rapid algae growth has clouded the water, making it difficult to see the pool’s bottom. This issue follows a renovation project costing over $14 million, which now requires further repairs.

On Saturday, President Trump announced the arrest of several individuals accused of vandalizing the pool. This admission marks a significant acknowledgment of the project’s issues. The algae bloom has worsened due to peeling paint, originally described by Trump as “American flag blue.” This paint is now shedding, drawing tourists for unusual reasons.

Among those arrested was David Carter Hearn, a 67-year-old cyclist and former Olympian in canoeing. Hearn claimed he simply stopped to observe, touching a strip of peeling paint mixed with algae. He was quickly detained by the U.S. Park Police, accused of destroying government property, a serious charge with potential for a 10-year imprisonment. Hearn denies these accusations, stating he was acting as a “curious, concerned citizen.”

The administration has withheld the identities of others accused of vandalisms, which Trump suggested could result in lengthy jail sentences. He also alleged without evidence that chemicals had been poured into the pool, further damaging it.
