Lesley Stahl and Others Stay at ’60 Minutes’ Amid Crisis

Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, and Jon Wertheim have decided to remain at ’60 Minutes’, concluding days of uncertainty about the potential departure of its key on-air personalities. The correspondents revealed their decision in an email to the show’s staff, emphasizing their intent to ‘repair and preserve’ the reputation of the prestigious CBS News program.

The trio had been grappling with the aftermath of a major shake-up initiated by Bari Weiss, CBS News’ editor in chief, who recently terminated Tanya Simon, the executive producer, alongside several longstanding producers and correspondents. In their email, the correspondents were clear about their dissatisfaction with these ‘heartbreaking’ changes. They cautioned that the loss of editorial independence would compel them to leave the program.

The changes in leadership have included the appointment of Nick Bilton, a tech journalist and filmmaker with no broadcast news experience, as the new leader of ’60 Minutes’. This decision has elicited a strong reaction, including from veteran correspondent Scott Pelley, who criticized Bilton and Weiss during a meeting. Subsequently, Pelley was dismissed from his position.

Nick Bilton has actively sought to retain the trusted correspondents. He has assured Ms. Stahl and her colleagues that the show’s journalistic standards will remain intact. He also communicated to the staff that ’60 Minutes’ would continue to operate independently of its parent company, which David Ellison oversees.

In an interview, Lesley Stahl shared that the decision to stay was reached after extensive discussions across multiple continents, involving long phone calls and video conferences. Mr. Wertheim, who is currently covering the French Open in Paris, participated in these discussions despite the time zone differences.
