LeBron James to Depart Los Angeles Lakers After Eight Seasons

LeBron James, often regarded as one of the greatest NBA players, will leave the Los Angeles Lakers before the 2026-2027 season. The team confirmed this decision, marking the end of James’ eight-year tenure with the Lakers. During this time, he led the team to their 17th NBA championship in the pandemic-altered 2019-2020 season.

Lakers governor Jeanie Buss expressed gratitude for James’ contribution. “LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We are grateful for his eight years with the Lakers, including the 2020 championship under challenging circumstances and the numerous records he broke,” Buss stated. “We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family.”

James has yet to announce where he will play next. The NBA’s free agency negotiation period opens on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET. During his time with the Lakers, James became the NBA’s all-time leader in points scored, games played, and seasons with a single team. He earned an unparalleled 22 NBA All-Star selections.

James first gained national attention as a high school player in Akron, Ohio when Sports Illustrated labeled him “The Chosen One.” The Cleveland Cavaliers selected him as the first overall draft pick in 2003. His initial stint with Cleveland included a 2007 NBA Finals appearance, but due to team frustrations, he joined the Miami Heat in 2011.

In Miami, alongside stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, the trio won two championships in four years. These Heat teams are seen as some of the earliest “super teams” built through free agency.

James returned to the Cavaliers for the 2014-2015 season, playing with Kyrie Irving. Their partnership led to four consecutive NBA Finals appearances against the Golden State Warriors. Cleveland claimed the 2015-2016 championship after an unprecedented comeback from a 3-1 series deficit.

Before the 2018-2019 season, James joined the Lakers as a free agent. Going forward, the Lakers’ strategy centers on Luka Doncic. They acquired him through a significant trade with the Dallas Mavericks last year. Doncic signed a three-year extension with the Lakers in 2025, and now represents the new face of the franchise.
