LeBron James is available as a free agent for the first time in eight years, drawing interest from several teams interested in signing the 41-year-old for what may be his last season. According to a report by Alex Schiffer of Front Office Sports, every team except the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors seems to be stepping aside.
“Various Western Conference executives informed Front Office Sports that there is an expectation for James to opt for the Warriors over the Cavaliers for his 24th NBA season,” Schiffer reported. “Despite the fact that Cleveland holds the favorite spot in prediction markets and Bill Simmons described the move as a ‘done deal,’ there are executives who believe that Golden State remains a contender for acquiring James.”
Another source from the league anticipates that James might choose the Cavaliers, yet the overall view among executives surveyed by FOS is that he will likely decide between the Warriors and Cavaliers.
LeBron James, originally from Akron, was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick by the Cavaliers in 2003. As a reigning back-to-back NBA MVP, he left Cleveland in his well-known “The Decision” for the Miami Heat in 2010. His time with the Heat was successful with consecutive NBA titles in 2012 and 2013, alongside achieving his third and fourth MVP awards, before his return to Cleveland in 2014.
From 2014 to 2018, James and the Cavaliers developed a notable rivalry with the Warriors, witnessing the Warriors clinch three championships in four years. The significant exception was in 2016 when James led the Cavaliers to overcome a 3-1 series deficit, securing the 2016 NBA Finals.
James joined the Los Angeles Lakers in July 2018, capturing his fourth championship in 2020. He said goodbye to the Lakers on June 30.

Choosing to finish his career in Cleveland, where it began, seems logical for James. Nonetheless, the prospect of playing alongside fellow legends Stephen Curry and Draymond Green and under the guidance of esteemed coach Steve Kerr in the Bay Area presents an alluring option.
