Laura Loomer’s Shift on Ukraine and Its Consequences

In Kyiv, Ukraine, Laura Loomer has acknowledged being misled by conspiracy theories about the country. Previously known for propagating such theories, Loomer now admits to falling for falsehoods herself. Her change in stance urges conservatives to be cautious of Moscow’s propaganda, which she believes has deceived many on the American right.

Speaking with The Associated Press in Kyiv, Loomer emphasized the importance of independent research over relying on podcasters to shape opinions. Her interview occurred in an underground bomb shelter due to a missile threat. Despite not holding an official position, Loomer maintains influence with former President Donald Trump. She noted having spoken to him after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The reversal in Loomer’s viewpoint has been welcomed by Ukrainian leaders, despite past tensions with Trump. Her presence has also sparked surprise and skepticism in the U.S. She insists that Ukraine is not financing her travels.

Loomer’s trip coincides with an important meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy in Washington. With ongoing discussions in Congress about new sanctions against Russia, Loomer believes her visit has refocused attention on the conflict.

“You don’t need to listen to a podcaster and let them influence your opinion about a country. You can look at those facts yourself,” Loomer stated.

Once a critic of Ukraine, Loomer acknowledges being influenced by Russian propaganda. She previously minimized the war and amplified misleading narratives, describing Ukraine as laden with Nazis. She attributes her indoctrination to bans on American social media, pushing her towards platforms like Telegram where Russian media thrives.

Her realization emerged gradually as prominent figures like Tucker Carlson shifted their rhetoric. Loomer, presenting herself as an independent journalist, believes her change is already influencing members of Trump’s movement. Many have contacted her, expressing newfound awareness of misinformation.

Ukrainian officials see Loomer’s conversion as a chance to win over a prominent Trump ally. She has met with top officials and even toured significant sites under attack. Behind these gestures lies a belief that Loomer’s influence could positively impact U.S.-Ukraine relations.

While some dismiss her influence, Trump has often heeded her advice. He is actively following her journey, praising her interaction with Zelenskyy through social media.

Loomer is known for spreading conspiracy theories, yet she now criticizes misinformation spread by influential podcasters. Highlighting how these figures distort public perception, she categorizes this information war as a substantial security threat.

Skeptical of Russian influence, Loomer challenges leaders to address foreign interference more seriously. Although Ukraine did not fund her trip, Loomer stresses her independent motivations:

“If it’s fake, why did I risk my life? I’m in a bomb shelter right now. I barely slept this week,” she declared.
