These filings are connected to an ‘alienation of affection’ lawsuit filed by her ex-bodyguard’s former wife, Heather Ammel. Ammel’s lawsuit accuses Sinema of causing the end of her 14-year marriage to Matthew Ammel. This lawsuit relies on a rare legal provision in North Carolina that allows a deserted spouse to claim damages from an outside party responsible for breaking up a marriage.

The Arizona Republic first reported on Sinema’s deposition testimony and court documents. Sinema admitted that her professional relationship with Matthew Ammel turned romantic and sexual in 2024, during her time in the Senate. The documents detail various encounters and communications, covering states like California, Arizona, New York, and Washington, D.C. According to the Associated Press, Heather Ammel is seeking at least $75,000 in damages from the former senator.

Sinema’s high political profile draws public attention to the case. Once a Democrat and later an independent, Sinema served Arizona in the Senate from 2019 to early 2025, known for her moderate stance. Both Ammel’s and Sinema’s attorneys were contacted by Newsweek for comments.

In a July 31 deposition testimony and court filings, Sinema described the development of her relationship with Matthew in May 2024. According to court records cited by Fox News, the Ammels officially separated on November 1, 2024, and finalized their divorce in March 2026. Sinema admitted the relationship grew ‘romantic and intimate,’ involving regular communication through calls, emails, and encrypted apps while she was in Congress.

Sinema remembered an incident where she was staying at an Airbnb in Napa, California. During this stay, she recalled, “We were outside. Matt kissed me. We went inside and had sex.” A deposition transcript from The Arizona Republic provided these details.

Sinema was queried about a text to Matthew featuring her in a towel. The former senator claimed the image related to sports, as she is an athlete, elaborating that the photo displayed cupping marks.

Sinema did not deny her relationship with Ammel, though aware of his married status. She argued it happened outside of North Carolina, where the lawsuit originated. Her testimony remains crucial as the court considers the progression of the case.

What Happens Next

The court now faces the decision of whether North Carolina holds personal jurisdiction over Sinema. Both parties submitted additional briefs on August 12, providing deposition excerpts and other proofs. Sinema indicated her intent to present live witnesses concerning jurisdiction issues.

U.S. District Judge David A. Bragdon will review these submissions to determine if the case can proceed in North Carolina or if Sinema’s motion for dismissal will be approved.
