Kirkwood Triumphs at Freedom 250 Grand Prix

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Kyle Kirkwood emerged victorious at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, held in Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon. Kirkwood, one of the few American drivers in the competition, seized the lead from Álex Palou early on and maintained his position.

Kirkwood’s performance throughout the weekend was impressive, with only Palou being able to challenge him at times. However, late cautions nullified much of his progress, providing an opening for Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard. Despite being without a drive for the next season, Lundgaard showed strength early in the final green flag run, benefiting from his red alternate tires compared to Kirkwood’s primary set. Nonetheless, his advantage dwindled as the race progressed.

The race concluded with Lundgaard securing second place, followed by Kirkwood’s Andretti Global teammate, Will Power, in third. This victory was significant for Kirkwood’s championship aspirations, reducing Palou’s lead to 91 points.

The day was challenging for Palou. Serving a drive-thru penalty during his first pit stop and facing issues with his front left tire on another, he later made another error, crashing on lap 122. This incident resulted in a late caution.

The triumph marked Kirkwood’s second win of the season, the first being at the Grand Prix of Arlington. At 27, he now boasts seven career wins, six of which have occurred on street circuits.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix, held as a one-time event to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, may not recur. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania took part in the event by riding in the Beast for an honorary lap before the race. Trump also waved the green flag at the race’s start, with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy waving the checkered flag at the finish.

Kirkwood, along with second-place Lundgaard, celebrated on the podium after the conclusion of the race.

The IndyCar season continues, with three races remaining. A double-header at the Milwaukee Mile is scheduled for next weekend, leading up to the season finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on September 6.
