Judge Penalizes Trump Lawyers and Criticizes Justice Department in IRS Lawsuit

The latest legal developments involving President Trump challenge both his legal team and the U.S. Justice Department. A federal judge imposed penalties against Trump’s lawyers and voiced severe criticism of the Justice Department. Judge Kathleen Williams delivered this verdict regarding a civil lawsuit Trump filed against the IRS.

• The judge identified Alejandro Brito and Daniel Epstein, two lawyers representing Trump, for professional discipline.
• She referred Brito to the Florida Bar and restricted Epstein’s practice in the Southern District of Florida.

Williams prevented the Justice Department, IRS, and Trump from using parts of their settlement as evidence in future legal actions. Her decision calls the lawsuit a misuse, intended for an “improper purpose” without legal basis.

“There was never adverseness between the Parties; there was never a real case or controversy,” Judge Williams noted in her decision.

The judge sent her order to the State Bar of New York and the D.C. Bar, involving acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward.

These actions arose after a group of 35 former judges critiqued the May settlement for corruption. This settlement concluded a $10 billion lawsuit Trump and his sons filed against the IRS over leaked tax returns, which was to include a $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” fund. Despite backlash from Congress, Blanche confirmed the Justice Department would abandon this fund.

Although parts of the settlement remain, such as prohibiting IRS claims against Trump and his associates, the former judges believe reopening the case was essential. Williams evaluated whether she had jurisdiction, given Trump’s control over the federal agency involved.

Williams accused Trump’s administration of not adhering to proper legal responsibilities. Her order criticized the Department of Justice’s agreement failing to defend the lawsuit adequately.

“The agreement aimed to misuse court authority for misleading legitimacy,” she wrote. “Its purpose was to favor Trump’s associates at significant taxpayer expense.”

Williams highlighted that Trump’s administration ignored ethical and legal duties while attempting to manipulate judicial proceedings.

Attorney General nominee Todd Blanche, heading to the Senate Judiciary hearing, faces questions regarding the proposed immunity fund and procedural concerns regarding Trump’s immunity.
