Social media buzzed with reactions to Kerr’s achievement. Team Scotland expressed their pride, writing, ‘A new world record. Congratulations to Josh Kerr, breaking the long-standing mile world record with an incredible run of 3:42.66. What an achievement.’ The Olympic Games’ official account also applauded Kerr, highlighting the significance of breaking a 27-year record.

Kerr had specifically targeted the London Diamond League mile as a key goal for the season, as noted by the AP. In an interview with BBC Sport, Kerr emphasized the supportive atmosphere at London Stadium during his race. ‘It was just me, my shoes, and the track,’ he said. ‘I was absolutely deaf in that last 110 meters.’

He further explained, ‘I didn’t take my foot off the gas, but at one point, I started to glide and thought, ‘Oh wow, this feels incredible.’ Realizing he was slowing down, Kerr focused on reaching the finish line. Seeing a time of 42-something was his goal, making his result even more rewarding.

Before the race, Kerr had declared his intention to chase the record, adding pressure to his performance. ‘It’s overwhelming with the amount of hype,’ Kerr admitted. Despite the potential risks of announcing his goal early, he credited his success to the support and consistency from his team.

Reflecting on the record-breaking performance, Kerr expressed hopes of leaving a lasting impact on British athletics. ‘If I am to leave my mark as a British legend, I have to deliver these performances,’ he stated. He acknowledged the hard work behind the scenes, both personally and from his team.

Before turning professional, Kerr excelled at the University of New Mexico, winning three NCAA titles and setting the collegiate record in the 1,500 meters, as noted on the university’s athletic website.

In this record-breaking race, Kerr improved his previous personal-best mile time by nearly three seconds, solidifying his place in the history of track and field.
