A strong earthquake struck southern Japan, leading to significant damage and disruption across various regions. Multiple people remain trapped in a mall following the seismic event. Local fire officials reported that the partially destroyed AEON Mall in Kumamoto Prefecture experienced an explosion on its second floor. State broadcaster NHK provided footage showing numerous fire trucks parked outside the mall, images of collapsed ceilings, and facade with debris scattered on the surrounding road.
Early images from the aftermath reveal the disruption caused by the 7.1-magnitude earthquake. At Fukuoka’s JR Hakata Station, passengers crowded the area due to suspended bullet train services. Fallen shelves and office equipment were seen in Kumamoto Prefecture, where the exterior wall of a store in Kumamoto City also collapsed.
State broadcaster NHK reported that at least 12 buildings had collapsed, including instances where people remained trapped inside. Most incidents occurred in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Aerial footage captured the damage in a large commercial facility and mall, showcasing a collapsed ceiling and exposed structure. The earthquake also caused pillars holding a shrine to collapse and resulted in fires in at least seven locations across Kumamoto Prefecture.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency confirmed the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 and a depth of 10 kilometers, placing it at the highest end of Japan’s seismic intensity scale. The Cabinet Office’s Disaster Management Division noted the earthquake struck at 4:27 p.m. local time, triggering a tsunami advisory for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas. The warning was later lifted.
