iO Theater Celebrates 45 Years of Long-Form Improv

10 minutes ago 0

Chicago’s iO Theater is marking its 45th anniversary with a three-day event, IO45, from November 5 to 7. Founded in 1981 by Charna Halpern and David Shepherd as the ImprovOlympic, the theater was initially known for hosting team-based comedy competitions. When Shepherd left Chicago, Halpern collaborated with Del Close to shift the focus to long-form improv, emphasizing storytelling through a form dubbed ‘the Harold.’

The Harold, characterized by scenes that connect to form a cohesive narrative, pushed improv forward over the past 45 years. Brad Pike, iO’s current creative director, stresses the growth of the community, which was once dominated by male performers but now reflects diverse voices and talents.

IO45 aims to showcase both veteran performers who pioneered long-form improv and newer talents who continue to innovate the art form. While previous anniversaries spotlighted iO alumni in film and television, this celebration prioritizes those who entertain nightly on Kingsbury Street.

Performances will include groups like Improvised Jane Austen, Escándalo, and Stir Friday Night. Host Robert Kapaku and Jonathan Lee-Rey will lead a showcase at HAIBAYÔ. Stir Friday Night’s presence at iO underscores connections within the AAPI community, fostering networking opportunities for Asian comedians.

Improv differs from sketch comedy by involving the audience and creating spontaneous performances. As Pike notes, improv resonates with audiences seeking authenticity in live, human-driven art. Attendees can expect The Scene with T.J. Jagodowski, 3 Square, and Frank Booth, among others. Stand-up from Maggie Winters and a panel featuring Halpern with early iO performers round out the weekend.

Pike emphasizes iO’s content as its talent, fostering a community-driven theater. He warns against compromising this foundational principle, as iO’s performers are irreplaceable.
