Police in Northern California are examining the events surrounding the shooting of a 40-year-old New York Times executive. The incident took place over the weekend when the executive was fatally shot by his in-laws in a parking lot, as reported by officials.
Jonathan McKinsey, a resident of Dublin, California, was discovered by officers in the parking lot with gunshot injuries. He was declared dead at the scene. McKinsey held the position of director of engineering for New York Times Games, where he had been employed for over three years.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon. A sergeant from the Dublin police, driving near a local sports complex, noticed a man laying on the ground in a parking lot. The man was later identified as McKinsey. Several witnesses were present at the location, according to local news sources.
As the sergeant began his examination, police dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting the incident. Witness Kevin Stein from Dublin expressed his shock to KTVU-TV, noting it was surprising the act had been committed in such a public setting.
The suspected shooters, McKinsey’s in-laws, are identified as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, from Dublin. They were apprehended nearby under suspicion of murder and are being held at Santa Rita Jail. Authorities currently believe there are no more suspects and assure there is no danger to public safety.
The Dublin Sports Grounds, which was initially closed during the investigation, has since reopened. The inquiry into the shooting and its preceding circumstances is ongoing.
