The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy continued in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on Monday. This followed an emotionally charged opening week that included harrowing testimonies and a jury visit to Clancy’s home. Life Before the Tragedy
In diary entries from months before the incident, Clancy detailed her experiences with motherhood. She voiced struggles with her newborn, Callan, expressing anxiety and concern over issues like his sleep and health. Clancy also shared her apprehensions about returning to her job as a labor and delivery nurse and challenges with breastfeeding, which left her feeling disconnected from her family.
“I’m so desperate to get a mental break from taking care of everyone that my mind is trying to find something physically wrong with me,” she wrote on November 18, 2022.
Defense Arguments and Mental Health Concerns
Clancy’s defense argues that postpartum psychosis, a severe mental health condition, overwhelmed her. Her attorneys assert that Clancy, a 35-year-old mother, suffered from undiagnosed bipolar disorder exacerbated by an unstable regimen of psychiatric medications. They argue these factors contributed to her impaired reality at the time.
The prosecution claims Clancy acted with intent and should face criminal responsibility for the deaths of Callan, Dawson, and Cora Clancy, aged eight months to five years.
Diary Excerpts and Court Proceedings
Both prosecution and defense read from Clancy’s journals in court. Her writings described her feelings of sadness and guilt over not breastfeeding and her preoccupation with her child’s sleep schedule.
Clancy wrote, “I have crazy brain fog. I feel like I can’t make a plan. I’m terrified of Cal getting overtired now because I feel I can’t help him.”
In lawsuits filed, both Lindsay and her ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, claim healthcare providers failed to recognize Clancy’s risk to herself and her children. Providers named in the lawsuits dispute these allegations.

Clancy sought help at a postpartum depression program in December 2022. Her lawsuit indicates that clinicians there suggested her symptoms could be medication-related. She was instructed to taper off an antipsychotic drug and was discharged after one day.
Clancy admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital on New Year’s Eve, where she stayed for several days. Post-discharge, her psychiatrist saw her briefly on January 23, 2023. Her attorneys claim that the next day, she heard a compelling voice instructing her to harm her children and herself.
The Incident
Patrick Clancy returned to a horrific scene at their home, witnessing a disturbing reality. He found a bloodied bedroom, an open window, his wife injured, and the children in the basement.
In a 911 call played in court, Patrick Clancy said, “She killed the kids!”
Lindsay Clancy, physically paralyzed after an attempted suicide, expressed horror when questioned later in the hospital. She asked about visitors and her family’s whereabouts.
Prosecution’s Focus
Prosecutor Shanan Buckingham emphasized in her opening statement that the trial should focus on Clancy’s actions, not the medical community’s handling of her mental health.
If convicted of murder, Clancy faces life imprisonment without parole. If acquitted due to a lack of criminal responsibility, she would be committed to a state mental health facility.
