Intense Scrutiny Marks Todd Blanche’s Confirmation Hearing

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche faced rigorous questioning during his confirmation hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senators drilled Blanche on the Justice Department’s autonomy from the White House, the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, and election fraud allegations.

Concerns Over DOJ’s Independence

The committee focused on the Department’s treatment of millions of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, known as the Epstein Files. Additionally, they questioned Blanche about whether he would use the DOJ as a means of retribution for President Donald Trump.

Undecided Key Senators

Two Republican Senators, Thom Tillis from North Carolina and John Cornyn from Texas, hold pivotal votes but have not decided whether to support Blanche. Cornyn expressed unease with the $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund, connected to a settlement between Trump and the IRS, which Blanche acknowledged remains “enforceable” yet inactive.

“The hearing is not even halfway done,” Cornyn stated, emphasizing his intention to review additional information before making a decision.

During the session, Blanche acknowledged his past role as Trump’s lawyer, clarifying to Sen. John Kennedy that he is now the deputy attorney general.

Similarly, Tillis expressed concerns about the anti-weaponization fund and questioned whether it has been effectively terminated. Blanche volunteered to work on legislation to ensure its permanent end.

Democratic Opposition

Democratic Senators remain opposed to Blanche. Sen. Dick Durbin criticized his handling of Epstein-related documents and expressed skepticism about Blanche’s integrity, linking him to Trump’s reputation.

Sen. Chris Coons, while recognizing Blanche’s qualifications as a prosecutor, questioned his willingness to support what he perceived as a weaponization of the department under Trump’s influence.
