The polls in New Hampshire, a key swing state, have started closing as both Democratic and Republican Senate nominations are contested this Tuesday. The outcome could decide whether Republicans maintain control of the Senate during the midterm elections.

Democratic Primary Clash

In the Democratic Senate primary, socialist-aligned candidate Karishma Manzur is challenging establishment-backed four-term Representative Chris Pappas. Manzur, once considered an unlikely contender, has recently gained significant momentum. Her rise coincides with several high-profile victories by the far-left in a broader struggle within the Democratic Party over its future direction.

The victor of this primary will face either John E. Sununu or Scott Brown, both former senators, in a bid to succeed retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen. Shaheen was the first woman elected as both governor and senator in the United States.

Manzur aims to upset Pappas, criticizing him for prioritizing corporate interests and political donors over the needs of New Hampshire residents. She advocates for policies like universal healthcare, a minimum wage boost to $20 per hour, abolishing ICE, and ending military aid to Israel. She accuses Pappas, supported by lobby group AIPAC over the years, of enabling what she describes as “genocide.”

Meanwhile, in the Republican primary, candidates are divided over former President Trump’s influence. Trump endorsed Sununu, a Republican critic, over Brown, who previously served as a Trump ambassador. Brown accuses Sununu of kowtowing to Trump and the GOP establishment, while Sununu emphasizes his commitment to New Hampshire residents, not Washington politics.

Sununu avoids discussing Trump’s endorsement, focusing instead on his local support. He expresses a willingness to stand for New Hampshire without relying on national figures.

Congressional Contests

In the 1st Congressional District, Stefany Shaheen, a former city councilor, faces Maura Sullivan, a Marine veteran, and progressive Carleigh Beriont for the Democratic nomination. The GOP side sees Anthony DiLorenzo and Hollie Noveletsky as leading contenders.

In the 2nd District, first-term Democratic Representative Maggie Goodlander is challenged by state Rep. Paige Beauchemin. Lily Tang Williams, a former Colorado Libertarian Party chair, leads the Republican primary.

Governor’s Race

Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte, with experience as a U.S. senator and attorney general, faces no significant opposition as she seeks re-election. On the Democratic side, Cinde Warmington runs unopposed for the gubernatorial nomination.
