The Department of Justice has indicted 12 individuals for their alleged involvement in a drone smuggling operation into federal prisons across several states. This scheme efficiently smuggled drugs, cell phones, and weapons into these facilities. Former federal prosecutor Jim Trusty noted the difficulties in intercepting drones, which completed 38 deliveries to 10 correctional sites.
One notable incident at Sussex I State Prison in Virginia involved the interception of a package valued at approximately $324,000. Virginia prison authorities discovered a suspicious package containing suspected methamphetamine, 17 cell phones, and papers soaked with an unknown liquid. The contents indicated the sophisticated nature of these smuggling attempts.
The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) revealed that the package included multiple hex wrenches, USB Wi-Fi adapters, SIM cards, and an assortment of tobacco products and other items. This array of contraband further underscores the extent and complexity of the smuggling activities.
VADOC Director Joseph Walters acknowledged the sophistication of such operations, emphasizing the ongoing challenges in combating contraband smuggling. He praised the vigilance of Sussex I State Prison staff, commending their efforts to safeguard the facility and its inmates.
