Impeachment Trial of Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte

4 weeks ago 0

The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte of the Philippines is scheduled to start on Monday. This trial underscores a significant conflict between two of the country’s prominent political dynasties.

Lawmakers have accused Ms. Duterte, daughter of the former Philippine president, of embezzlement and issuing death threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. These allegations come just four years after the Marcoses and Dutertes formed an alliance in 2022.

Ms. Duterte, who assumed the role of vice president in 2022 as part of Mr. Marcos’s ticket, rejects these charges. She argues they aim to thwart her presidential ambitions in 2028, echoing her father’s path. Her father, Rodrigo Duterte, is currently detained in The Hague, facing trial for crimes against humanity related to his drug war policies.

Her legal team has dismissed the case, labeling it as “constitutionally infirm, procedurally defective, and substantively deficient.” The Senate in the Philippines, similar to the United States, is tasked with the trial and verdict of impeached officials by the House of Representatives.

Ms. Duterte has faced impeachment proceedings twice. In May, the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor of her impeachment.
