Nearly half of Canadians now consider the U.S. president’s actions as one of their country’s main issues, according to a recent national poll by Abacus Data. This survey, conducted before Trump’s controversial AI video featuring ‘Donald Duck Army,’ shows a growing concern among Canadians.
The poll, released on a Sunday, reveals that 45% of Canadians view Trump and his administration as one of the top three national concerns, marking a seven-point increase in two weeks. This ranks second after the rising cost of living, noted by 62% of respondents. Quebec residents most frequently cited Trump as a concern. Other issues included the economy at 39%, housing affordability at 30%, and healthcare at 29%.
The strained relations between Ottawa and Washington have intensified following failed trade negotiations and new U.S. tariffs on Canadian products. Prime Minister Mark Carney halted talks on August 21, choosing not to accept U.S. terms. A 50% U.S. tariff was imposed the following day, affecting bilateral relations.

The survey suggests political impacts at home. If federal elections were today, 45% of committed voters would support the Liberals, while 35% would favor the Conservatives. This gives the Liberals a 10-point advantage, up from the previous 7-point lead as per Abacus’ earlier survey.
Among Canadians concerned about Trump, 60% would vote Liberal while 21% would choose Conservative. For dealing with Trump, 62% believe the Liberals are best suited, compared to 18% for the Conservatives.
Another issue heightening tension is Trump’s executive order changing Lake Ontario’s name to ‘Lake America.’ Canada firmly rejects this, as the name Ontario has historical significance, rooted in a Wendat word used for over 400 years. Google’s map service reflects this change for U.S. users, though Canadians still see ‘Lake Ontario.’
