Impact of Dodgers’ Trade for Tarik Skubal on MLB

17 hours ago 0

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a major move by acquiring Tarik Skubal, an ace pitcher, from the Detroit Tigers. This trade, coming just before Monday’s deadline, has caused significant excitement in Major League Baseball.

The Tigers fans are notably upset about losing Skubal, a back-to-back Cy Young Award winner. However, Chicago Cubs fans are also frustrated. The Cubs were a serious contender in the race to acquire Skubal. Early trade rumors suggested they had a real chance to secure the talented pitcher.

Throughout 2026, the Cubs’ starting rotation has been plagued by injuries. Despite these setbacks, the team managed to secure the top spot in the National League Wild Card race. Adding Skubal could have bolstered their position as a leading contender to challenge the Dodgers in the postseason. This opportunity might have allowed them to compete for the National League championship, especially against the Dodgers, who aim for a third consecutive World Series victory.

Instead, the Dodgers have strengthened their team as the playoffs near. The Cubs missed the chance to add a star like Skubal and inadvertently assisted Los Angeles in enhancing their already formidable roster.

In return for Skubal, Los Angeles sent prospects Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith to Detroit. Hope, a prominent prospect, was initially drafted by the Cubs in the 2023 MLB June Amateur Draft. Chicago traded him to the Dodgers in 2024 in a deal that brought first baseman Michael Busch to Chicago. Busch has been a reliable performer for the Cubs over the past three seasons.

Adding to the situation, Skubal may make his Dodgers debut shortly. The upcoming series between the Cubs and Dodgers in Chicago, starting Monday, could see Skubal on the mound, deepening the Cubs’ frustrations.
