US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested a former Illinois teacher, Giovana Mercedes Moreno Ochompy, in connection with a triple murder linked to the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang. Initially released by Chicago police due to sanctuary city policies, she was not reported to ICE. Tom Homan, the former acting ICE director, has criticized these policies as detrimental to federal law enforcement and public safety.
Additionally, ICE announced the arrest of Roberts Nemiro, a former contestant on Latvia’s “Dancing with the Stars,” in San Francisco. Nemiro, a Latvian national, overstayed his visa after entering the US in October 2011, with his visa expiring in August 2012. His criminal records include convictions for aggravated assault, battery, and drug-related offenses.
Nemiro participated in the Latvian version of “Strictly Come Dancing,” a TV series resembling “Dancing with the Stars” in the US. Despite operating in a sanctuary state like California, ICE managed to detain Nemiro, leading to his expected deportation. Lauren Bis, DHS Assistant Secretary, remarked on Nemiro’s transformation from a TV dancer to a criminal, noting ICE’s efforts to remove such individuals from US streets.
This arrest underscores the ongoing debate surrounding immigration enforcement, with the Trump administration emphasizing actions against noncitizens involved in violent crimes. DHS has highlighted the challenges faced in states like California where sanctuary policies obstruct federal immigration actions.
