Hunter Biden Faces Financial Struggles Amid Legal Battles

Hunter Biden, through a deposition transcript, has asserted that his family faces financial difficulties due to accumulating legal fees. The legal deposition arises from a lawsuit involving Biden and the legal firm Winston Taylor, who is seeking $17 million in unpaid legal fees. This firm, known for representing prominent Democrats, claims these fees relate to representation in criminal cases, congressional probes, and defamation lawsuits.

Biden stated, “My family doesn’t have any money, and it’s not their debt anyway.” He also mentioned possessing no valuable assets, aside from his self-created paintings, noting, “I don’t own anything of any value other than—and I don’t know the value of it—my paintings which I painted myself. So that’s it. And I don’t even have any other assets at all, stocks, bonds, anything like that, savings accounts.”

Recent reports suggest the Biden family may be struggling financially. The Wall Street Journal indicated in September 2025 that former President Joe Biden encounters significant challenges in monetizing his tenure in the White House compared to past presidents. According to a source familiar with his finances, Biden left office with an estimated $800,000 in personal debt and faces increased property taxes on his $2.7 million Delaware residence. Limited success in securing paid speaking events, common for former presidents, further compounds the issue, partly attributed to his low popularity and concerns about offending President Donald Trump.

Despite these challenges, Joe Biden receives over $400,000 annually in government pensions from his Congressional and Presidential service, as reported by the National Taxpayers Union Foundation.

Hunter Biden’s claim of lacking assets follows years of lavish spending associated with substance abuse and partying. Reports detail expenditures on crack cocaine, alcohol, luxury accommodations, escorts, and expensive jewelry for his brother’s widow, with whom he was romantically involved. These spending patterns might explain the rapid depletion of his wealth, which he gained from painting sales and a high-paying role at Ukrainian energy firm Burisma.

Biden remarked in the February deposition transcript, recently disclosed by his legal team, “I don’t have any assets. I don’t own a car. I don’t own a phone.” He contends Winston Taylor was aware of his financial inability to settle legal fees and believed they had a mutual understanding to “work something out.” However, the firm argues they attempted to link Biden with Democratic donors to assist with covering his legal costs.

In July, Hunter Biden gained a minor legal victory when a court awarded him $1.7 million in a defamation lawsuit. Yet, Winston Taylor intends to place a lien on this judgment, with collection complications arising since the opposing party, Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne, is reportedly out of the country.
