Historic Appointment of Darline Graham as South Carolina’s First Female Senator

Darline Graham, R-S.C., marks a series of milestones for South Carolina and the U.S. Senate. Sworn in on Tuesday, she becomes the first female senator from South Carolina. She also becomes the first woman to take a Senate seat after her brother, the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

“Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him,” Darline Graham remarked during her appointment ceremony. She referred to her brother as an outstanding leader and a genuinely good person.

Though she has never held elected office, Darline Graham has consistently supported her brother’s political career. She attended his campaign events and swearing-in ceremonies.

“It is such a privilege to finish some of his important work,” she stated. “I promise to work hard over the next several months to support the president and continue my brother’s efforts for South Carolina and the United States.” Years ago, her brother suggested she would be a great representative for the country if given a role in an administration.

Darline Graham’s rapid appointment as senator followed her brother’s sudden death, creating quite a stir in Washington, D.C. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed her on Monday, following President Donald Trump’s recommendation. She collaborated with Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., before her appointment.

“Lindsey took care of his little sister in years past. I am honored to ask Darline Graham to complete his work,” stated McMaster. Darline Graham will serve the remainder of her brother’s term until January as a caretaker senator. A new person will later take over as junior senator for South Carolina.

The upcoming special election in South Carolina to replace Lindsey Graham has seen interest from Reps. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Ralph Norman, R-S.C. The election is slated for August 11. While Trump has shown interest in Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C., his formal endorsement remains unannounced.

Republicans must decide on replacements for Lindsey Graham’s committee assignments. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., noted ongoing discussions about committee placements for Darline Graham.

“Obviously, his sister will be sworn in today, and then we’ll figure out which of his committees she wants to stay on, and then we’ll go from there,” Thune commented.
