Recently, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and President Trump’s adviser Jared Kushner engaged in a private meeting. This interaction comes at a crucial time, less than three months before the midterm elections.

Democrats, aiming to gain control of the House in November, see Jeffries as a potential future House Speaker. Meanwhile, Republicans, led by Mr. Trump, continue to label Democrats as extreme.

The New York Times first reported on this New York City meeting, which explored topics like housing, immigration, and cost of living. While the White House and Kushner’s representatives did not respond for comments, Jeffries issued a statement. He did not verify the meeting but criticized the Republicans’ approach to governance. “We will not tolerate a my-way-or-the-highway approach,” Jeffries asserted.

Kushner, though not holding a formal White House role, advises Mr. Trump on international matters. He and Jeffries previously collaborated on criminal justice reform during Trump’s initial term.

House Speaker Mike Johnson noted he learned about the meeting through media reports, expressing unfamiliarity with its details. Johnson remarked on Kushner’s external interests and limited daily involvement at the White House.

Trump has a history of frequent meetings with Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and former House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. However, his interactions with Schumer and Jeffries have been sparse this term, with more engagement through social media criticisms. Earlier this year, Jeffries referred to Trump as “the dumbest president ever,” while Trump made derogatory comments about Jeffries.

Despite tensions, Trump indicated potential cooperation with Jeffries in an interview. He labeled Jeffries as a “nice guy” and expressed a readiness to work together, acknowledging mutual harshness in their public discourse.
