Two Philadelphia police officers were hospitalized on Saturday morning following a shooting incident, officials reported. The event occurred around 1 a.m. along the 100 block of North 52nd Street in West Philadelphia.

Officers responded to a call about a man with a gun on a home’s porch. As they approached, they faced heavy gunfire, according to Commissioner Kevin Bethel. Both officers were swiftly taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for surgery, yet their conditions remain unknown at this time.

Commissioner Bethel identified one officer as a 40-year-old father of two, who sustained three gunshot wounds. The other officer, aged 33, with five children, was shot twelve times.

Following the initial confrontation, additional officers arrived to manage the situation. The suspect, who continued firing at the police, was apprehended after being removed from a tree. Law enforcement officers recovered two handguns and a shotgun at the scene. One handgun belonged to one of the injured officers, as per Commissioner Bethel.

Mayor Cherelle Parker emphasized the risks police face daily and encouraged the community to support the officers’ recovery. ‘I am thankful for their dedication. We must remember they are also parents, siblings, and family members,’ Parker stated.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to this gunfire incident. Further updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
