Despite the controversy, the Treasury Department defends the decision, citing the authority granted by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. The Department emphasizes that the coins are designed to symbolize the United States’ semiquincentennial and reflect President Trump’s vision for the nation.
This new initiative is part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to intertwine the president’s legacy with American currency, including his signature on new notes and proposals for a $250 bill featuring his portrait.
