Glen Hansard Dies in Motorcycle Crash

Academy Award-winning Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard has passed away at 56 following a motorcycle crash in Dublin. His management confirmed the news on Wednesday, expressing their heartbreak. Irish police reported that a man in his 50s died in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in Lucan, near Dublin, before 4:30 a.m. He was treated at the scene but declared dead shortly after. Police are calling for witnesses to the crash.

Born in Dublin in 1970, Hansard started as a busker before breaking into acting with the 1991 film “The Commitments.” He was notable for his work in the 2007 musical film “Once,” for which he co-wrote songs with Markéta Irglová. Hansard and Irglová received the Oscar for best original song for “Falling Slowly” in 2008. The musical’s stage adaptation ran on Broadway from 2012 to 2015 and won eight Tony Awards, with productions worldwide.

Off-screen, Hansard was the longstanding frontman of the rock band The Frames and collaborated with Irglová in The Swell Season. As a solo artist, he released five albums, with “Didn’t He Ramble” earning a Grammy nomination for best folk album in 2016. Hansard was a frequent performer on CBS Saturday Mornings’ “Saturday Sessions.” In 2015, he presented “Didn’t He Ramble,” with follow-up performances in 2018 and 2024. In August 2025, he reunited with Irglová for “Forward,” their first album as The Swell Season in 16 years.

In 2023, Hansard performed “Fairytale Of New York” with singer Lisa O’Neill at Shane MacGowan’s funeral, creating a lively atmosphere. For years, he led a Christmas Eve charity busk in front of Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre, supporting the Dublin Simon Community. The organization expressed devastation at his passing, noting his generosity and advocacy against homelessness.

Hansard is survived by his wife and 3-year-old son. In a 2023 interview, he shared how fatherhood had profoundly changed his life. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin expressed his condolences, recognizing Hansard’s significant cultural contributions. Martin extended sympathies to Hansard’s family, friends, and fans.
