George Lombard Jr. Shines in Yankees Debut

George Lombard Jr. had an outstanding debut for the New York Yankees, highlighted by a home run that contributed to a 2-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Lombard’s homer came in the fifth inning, during his second at-bat, when he connected with an 0-2 pitch from Cardinals starter Hunter Dobbins. The 392-foot drive into the left-field seats was a memorable moment for the young player, who is 21 years and 63 days old.

Lombard’s homer marked the first by a Yankees player in their debut since Jasson Domínguez homered against Justin Verlander in Houston on September 1, 2023. He is the sixth-youngest Yankees player since 1985 and the second-youngest shortstop within that period. Derek Jeter made his debut at 20 years and 337 days old in Seattle on May 29, 1995.

In addition to his offensive contribution, Lombard demonstrated defensive skills. He assisted in inning-ending double plays during the third and fifth innings which supported pitcher Ryan Weathers, who completed six strong innings. Lombard’s defensive plays included a precise off-balance throw in the third inning and a smooth step-and-throw maneuver in the fifth.

Ryan Weathers also performed well, allowing only four hits, striking out six, and not walking any batters. His effort contributed to the Yankees’ 12th shutout win, making them leaders in the American League for shutouts. David Bednar secured the final four outs and achieved his 25th save in 27 opportunities.

The Cardinals struggled offensively, marking their sixth shutout of the season. All-Star outfielder Jordan Walker was sidelined due to knee inflammation. Hunter Dobbins allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings.

The series will conclude on Wednesday night with St. Louis’ Andre Pallante (11-6, 3.72 ERA) facing New York’s Will Warren (11-6, 4.14 ERA).
