Gavin Hollowell Finds Success with Unique Pitching Style

The journey between Triple A and the majors has been familiar for right-hander Gavin Hollowell over the past four years. With 40 career appearances in the big leagues, most in 2023 with the Colorado Rockies, Hollowell is no stranger to proving himself. The Chicago Cubs have endured numerous bullpen injuries this year, granting opportunities to relievers like Hollowell. He now has a chance to showcase his skills against major-league hitters beyond being a simple depth option.

Hollowell remarked, “I don’t feel any different out there. I’m not reinventing the wheel. Just pitching and knowing my defense is unbelievable. If I stay in the zone, they’ll make plays, and strikeouts will follow.” Hollowell secured his first save with the Cubs in a 3-2 extra innings victory. Through 12 games, he has maintained a 2.08 ERA, allowing no earned runs in his last 8 2/3 innings with 10 strikeouts, three walks, and three hits.

Manager Craig Counsell noted, “He’s built confidence. His strike throwing is key. It’s always been effective.” Hollowell’s pitching style presents hitters with a unique challenge. His arm angle measures 10 degrees, one of the lowest among right-handers with at least 100 pitches this season. Pitching coach Tommy Hottovy describes Hollowell’s delivery as funky, taking advantage of his 6-foot-7 frame. “He’s unique. Over the plate, he’s effective. A low-slot pitcher typically throws east-west, but he’s more north-south. His fastball hits the top, changeup and sinker go down, and the sweeper strikes.”

Hollowell appreciates his distinct mechanics but explains, “Though I’m different, it feels normal. I used to throw over the top; over time, my arm slot dropped, and now, I find consistency.” His pitching arsenal now includes a changeup, previously ineffective but now considered a valuable addition. He revisited the changeup during spring training, utilizing a circle-change grip for improved effectiveness. It’s primarily used against left-handers, with only two of 19 thrown being put in play this season. Two strikeouts came from his changeup.

Hottovy adds, “As a former low-slot pitcher, the changeup is the trickiest. It took experimentation, but it clicked eventually.” Cubs aim to restore bullpen health soon. Closer Daniel Palencia is rehabbing in Arizona, targeting a mid-August return. Left-hander Hoby Milner is on track for an early August return post-rehabilitation. As the bullpen heals, Hollowell or Tyler Ferguson might see role adjustments, with potential additions before the August trade deadline. This experience is expected to yield long-term benefits.

Manager Counsell concluded, “Navigating 27 outs is critical. Our approach worked this year. The bullpen has responded exceptionally well.”
