Former Congressman George Santos from New York has agreed to pay $35,000 to settle charges with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The charges involved allegations of manipulative trading activity related to whether he would attend the State of the Union address. The CFTC announced the settlement in a statement on Friday.
The CFTC’s investigation concluded that Santos engaged in trades on the Kalshi platform, which pertained to predictions about his attendance at the State of the Union address. Such activities were seen as an effort to manipulate the outcomes of these trades.
Santos, who served as a representative in 2023, has not made public comments regarding this settlement. The CFTC has emphasized the importance of maintaining fair and transparent markets, highlighting this case as an example of enforcing regulations to prevent market manipulation.
