Many agree with Tkachuk, especially as the salary cap continues to rise. As other top players like San Jose’s Macklin Celebrini and Chicago’s Connor Bedard enter the contract market, they may surpass Carlsson’s proposed contract.

The issue for the Ducks revolves around their salary cap limitations. General Manager Pat Verbeek’s decision to allow an offer sheet suggests he recognizes Carlsson’s worth. The challenge is whether Anaheim can accommodate his $18 million AAV within their cap space.

At the time of the offer, the Ducks had under $18 million in projected cap room. Following the re-signing of defenseman Pavel Mintyukov, this figure dropped to roughly $9 million. The Ducks have until Friday to decide on matching the offer. If they choose not to, they’ll receive multiple first-round picks from the Flyers as compensation.
