Florida’s Approach to Preventing Teen Takeovers

Florida law enforcement has been proactive in preventing disruptive events known as ‘teen takeovers.’ St. Augustine Beach Police Chief Daniel Carswell and St. Johns County Sheriff Robert Hardwick have explained their strategy in addressing these planned gatherings.

Authorities employed electronic monitoring and a ‘zero tolerance’ policy. They used intelligence gathered from social media to identify those organizing gatherings and canceled the events before they took place. This initiative aimed to maintain public safety and deter future incidents.

St. Johns County recently intervened ahead of a planned takeover at St. Augustine Beach. The event had been promoted online, inviting young people to gather for what officials believed could become chaotic and violent.

‘This was not an invitation for a party. It was a call to create chaos on our beach,’ stated Chief Carswell.

Police warned potential participants, enforcing a zero-tolerance approach to such gatherings. Sheriff Hardwick shared that the process involved thorough monitoring of social media and community reports, helping to identify those involved in organizing the event.

The planned takeover was set for June 4, 2026, at the St. Augustine Beach Pier. Organizers attempted to discreetly promote it, but police efforts thwarted these plans.

‘We don’t accept this behavior in St. Johns County,’ Hardwick added.

Chief Carswell noted that, although no previous attempts were recorded in the county, similar events have occurred elsewhere. Social media platforms like TikTok often play a role in spreading these meetup invitations.

Coping with the unpredictability in the number of attendees makes these situations challenging, especially for smaller police departments.
