FIFA Investigates Argentina’s Conduct After World Cup Final

FIFA has launched an investigation into the conduct of Argentina following the World Cup final, labeling the incidents as “intolerable and unacceptable,” according to Spain coach Luis de la Fuente. The events took place after Spain’s 1-0 win in extra time, which ended Argentina’s reign as defending champion.

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was involved in altercations with Spain players Eric Garcia and Gavi. Additionally, Spain captain Rodri was hit in the stomach by Argentina defender Nahuel Molina. “It cannot be allowed,” De la Fuente stated to Spanish public broadcaster TVE, noting he was unaware of the incidents at the time, as he was “celebrating with other people.” Despite this, he expressed disappointment in the actions of players he had previously commended for their skills and coaching.

FIFA has yet to provide specifics regarding the scope of the investigation or if statements will be collected from Spain’s team members. Roberto Ayala, Argentina’s assistant coach, apologized for a confrontation with Dani Olmo, describing it as a shove rather than a punch.

De la Fuente applauded the composure of his players amidst the provocations, highlighting their professionalism during the situation at MetLife Stadium. “I want to emphasize our behavior in the face of aggression and provocation,” he remarked. The Spain squad formed a guard of honor for Argentina players during the medal ceremony with U.S. President Donald Trump. When Rodri lifted the trophy, most of the Argentina team turned away from the ceremony.

FIFA’s disciplinary rules permit a special prosecutor to propose sanctions against associations, clubs, and individuals. No timeline has been revealed for the proceedings, nor is it clear when any potential penalties for Argentina players might take effect, as the team is not scheduled for competitive matches in the near future.
