The family of 18-year-old Daniel Erving is advocating for murder charges following the discovery of his body in a Dallas-area lake. They are dissatisfied with the current charges against two teenagers who allegedly concealed evidence rather than reporting Erving’s drowning.
Erving, an honor student, disappeared after leaving his Rowlett home with only his cellphone. His other belongings, including his driver’s license and money, remained behind. On April 16, three days later, authorities found his body near Lake Ray Hubbard’s Paddle Point. The Dallas County Medical Examiner identified his cause of death as an accidental drowning.
Despite this conclusion, Erving’s family demands further investigation. Their lawyer, Sean Daredia, questions the circumstances, asking why the individuals present discarded Daniel’s clothes and his phone if his death was truly accidental. He presses for the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office to present the case to a grand jury.
Dallas police identified two individuals at the scene, Lucas Roper, 19, and a juvenile, who face charges of tampering with physical evidence, a third-degree felony. The police detailed the teenagers’ actions, including deleting messages and discarding Erving’s items instead of notifying authorities. They have both been apprehended.
The Next Generation Action Network, a civil rights organization, joined Erving’s family in a press conference to call for transparency and additional charges. They criticized the delay in arrests and question why the situation was not promptly reported to Erving’s family.
Erving’s mother, Tameca Erving, insists someone must be accountable for her son’s fate, while his sister, Mackenzie Erving, recounted Daniel’s aspiration to join the military, emphasizing the lack of aid rendered during a life-threatening situation.
NGAN President Dominique Alexander remarked that pursuing justice means following where the evidence leads and that the investigation must continue. Every aspect must be scrutinized to determine any further charges.
While the Rowlett Police Department initially handled Erving’s disappearance, the Dallas Police Department now leads the investigation due to jurisdictional reasons. Dallas officials insist that they maintain communication and cooperation with Rowlett authorities to ensure comprehensive investigative efforts.
The case remains an active investigation, with the police noting the necessity to preserve the integrity of the ongoing procedures. Despite Erving’s body being found months ago, unanswered questions and alleged evidence mishandling keep the case in the spotlight.
