The Tragic Death of Daniel Magaña

Family members are demanding answers regarding the death of Daniel Magaña, a 40-year-old man who passed away after being found unresponsive in a downtown Los Angeles jail cell. Magaña’s family questions whether authorities failed to recognize a mental health crisis.

Magaña died on September 5, ten days after he was found unconscious at Twin Towers Correctional Facility. His relatives say he was arrested on August 21 for allegedly evading police and was booked into the jail that day.

Concerns About Mental Health Management

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department recorded that Magaña was the ninth inmate to die at Twin Towers this year. A wrongful death claim filed by his family asserts that the jail staff were aware of Magaña’s history of mental health struggles and were notified of his suicidal intentions during booking.

According to the claim, Magaña suffered a medical emergency shortly after his arrival, requiring hospitalization. His family argues that jail staff failed to provide necessary mental health housing and treatment upon his return.

Family Seeks Clarity

Magaña’s sister, Alejandra, described him as a sociable and cheerful person. She recounted their family’s efforts to manage his mental health, including medication and a plan for crisis situations.

On the day of his arrest, the family alerted authorities about Magaña’s possible mental health crisis. However, they were later informed of his arrest for evading police and eventual transfer to Twin Towers.

Questioning Jail Safety

Attempts to gather information from the jail were met with insufficient responses, according to Alejandra. Conflicting statements about the cause of Magaña’s injuries added to the family’s confusion and grief.

Deputies are tasked with ensuring regular welfare checks every thirty minutes, but a report from the L.A. County’s Office of Inspector General highlighted issues with inconsistent safety checks.

Impact on Family

Magaña leaves behind five children, who express their deep sense of loss. Eldest son Noah, 18, has faced the painful reality of his father’s death, recognizing the importance of honoring his father’s legacy.

Alejandro, 13, shared his emotional connection with Magaña through his father’s cherished Monte Carlo car.

Efforts to Address Jail Conditions

L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna has acknowledged the challenges in reducing in-custody deaths, citing the aging and health-compromised inmate population. He requested a review of jail conditions from the National Institute of Corrections earlier this year.

Additionally, California Attorney General Rob Bonta has sued the Sheriff’s Department over alleged unsafe and unconstitutional jail conditions. Efforts to improve include deploying body-worn cameras to monitor inmate interactions.
