Falcons Face Quarterback Challenges Ahead of Week 1

1 week ago 0

The Atlanta Falcons have announced a last-minute change in their quarterback lineup just days before their game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tua Tagovailoa was initially set to be the starting quarterback for Week 1. However, an oblique injury suffered during Thursday’s practice has sidelined him, as confirmed by NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

Michael Penix Jr., who had been competing with Tagovailoa for the starting position, is still recuperating from a torn ACL. He had only recently resumed full practice sessions, making his absence for Sunday’s game expected. Tagovailoa’s performance in the preseason was under scrutiny, with many questioning if he should have been a contender for the starter role. In his preseason appearances, Tagovailoa completed 10 of 13 passes for 117 yards without recording any touchdowns or interceptions. This display did little to inspire confidence, particularly as he was outperformed by veteran Cooper Rush and rookie Jack Strand.

Now that both Tagovailoa and Penix are unavailable for the Steelers matchup, Cooper Rush will step in as the starting quarterback, with Jack Strand serving as his backup. The severity of Tagovailoa’s oblique strain will determine the length of his recovery time, ranging from one to three weeks for a minor strain to several weeks if more serious. Missing even a single game is considered a significant setback for Tagovailoa, as skepticism regarding his role as the starter has been mounting among fans eager to explore other quarterback options the Falcons have.
