Eric Bieniemy, offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, received encouraging news about his wife, Mia Bieniemy. She is no longer in intensive care following a shooting at their home in Ashburn, Northern Virginia. Andy Reid, head coach of the Chiefs, shared this update during a training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Mia Bieniemy, aged 57, is improving steadily after the incident on Sunday night. Authorities allege that the couple’s adult son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was involved in the shooting. Reid confirmed Mia’s progress, saying, “She’s doing better and making progress.” He emphasized the importance of her husband’s presence as she recovers.
“EB (Eric Bieniemy) is still with her and that part’s important that that stays in place,” Reid noted.
Elijah Bieniemy, 27, faces charges including malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Law enforcement described the event as a “domestic” disturbance. Although a motive has not been disclosed, the incident led to a rushed response by authorities. Dramatic video footage showed officers carrying Mia Bieniemy from the home as others, armed, approached the residence on Northpark Drive.
Despite her injuries, Mia Bieniemy managed to call 911, according to Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman. A criminal complaint mentions her being shot in areas including her left forearm, left shoulder, and chest. Elijah Bieniemy was subsequently detained at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center with a court date set for August 31.
Eric Bieniemy holds a prestigious role within professional football, directing the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive lineup, which includes notable players like quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce. Currently, it is unclear when Eric Bieniemy will return to his duties. The Chiefs begin their exhibition games on August 15 and the regular season on September 14.
Reid ensured that Eric remains updated on team matters, saying, “We stay in touch with him, keep him abreast of everything that’s going on.” He added that Eric benefits from practice session tapes when time allows.
Attempts to reach representatives from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and Public Defender for comments were unsuccessful.
